When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?

now, the day i was born and everyone said they had been expecting (hoping for?)a boy, everyday while brushing my teeth

What does "quirky" mean to you?

born before the furrowed brow. of feigned disapproval. we have more memory than rebuff can hold. like my mama. and the dance she does with her wig. and the way she takes it off in the middle. of church. just to show them. she ain't about putting on airs.

What does "black" mean to you?

here,
oyster knife and whet stone,
doo woped libations on hot concrete,
two meanings for kitchen,
it's how we stand out,
it's what's been getting the job done,
it's poison
death
and
rebirth
in one
like soil

What does "girl" mean to you?

guuuurl is relational.
it takes two to twirl youth
and a third to jump in.
and we do it for a long as we can.
and can cuss streetlights back off
we electrical impulse
resistance

even if we just by ourselves
we find a way to have a crush on something
to love it up real secret and loud
till it checks the "yes" box

What kind of quirky things do you like to do?

i guess being an artist. unafraid to say i'm afraid sometimes. but still break into a dance solo. in the middle of everywhere. to let you know i'm shy.

How do you embrace your quirky?

composting, jumping rope, learning to play bass guitar, amature boat building, having no attention span...what was the question?

What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?

haha...a "me too" every now and then.
