Profile Information

When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?
I've known all my life. I never quite "fit in." I at first attributed it to clumsiness...but alas, it was simply quirk. I never understood it, my mother being straight from the west indies didn't either. I wasn't like her or her mother or her cousins or her sister. I wasn't interested in learning how to cook the perfect Antiguan meal. I salivated in front of bookstores. I hated worrying about clothes/matching/all that jazz. I broke out in song at the oddest times. Growing up in the Bronx, it was something my friends and I learned to accept...kinda. My rants and raves about freedom and black people earned nothing but eye rolls....but they simply waited until I was finished to move on to the next subject. Then I went away to college and realized my quirk wasn't in vain. I met like minded quirky black women. Not the majority but we were still there. It was a beautiful struggle if you will, to truly understanding me.
What does "quirky" mean to you?
Different. Exciting. Unusual.
What does "black" mean to you?
Beauty. Love. Proud. Strong. Adaptive.
What does "girl" mean to you?
Female.
What kind of quirky things do you like to do?
play classical piano/guitar. rock out like there's no tomorrow. save the world through laughter and music. paint like a maniacal.....maniac. read stephen king novels in the dark. crochet long scarves. wear brightly colored toe socks that don't match. walk to the beat of the music that is constantly playing in my head. script movie scenes to music. work with behaviorally challenged girls. karaoke. break out in spontaneous dance solos. "be"- deeply and lovingly.
How do you embrace your quirky?
I live it, breathe it everyday. No compromising allowed.
What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?
Bright colors. Loud sounds. And all conflicts would be settled by a dance off.
How did you hear about QBG?
Facebook.

i appreciate the answers to the questions. i'm beginning to suspect that what we all have in common is a spirit that is too big for labels, it just kinda seeps out... music tends to trugger moving images for me too. are you working on a screenplay by chance?

i'm confused

i'm always confused
by what i want to be
and who i am
i want to be a friend
devoted and caring
but am I?
i see callousness and judgment in my heart
i see dark
i want to be the doting daughter
grateful and devout
but am i?
for i'veso much shame
and so much to hide
i want to be a brilliant musician
meticulous, talented, and breathtaking
but i'm rather stale and rehearsed
i want to be a lover
in tune and skilled
i'm actually really clumsy and clueless
i'd like to be a wife
supportive and loving
