When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?
At the tender age of 16 :-D
What does "quirky" mean to you?
Quirky: creative, open-minded, operating outside of conformity and predisposed norms. Creating our own quirky path, no the road less travelled will not do.
What does "black" mean to you?
{Black} evokes a lot of emotions in me. First I think of all of the images dominant society has rigged the word to mean {negativity, destruction, darkness} and then I remember all of the things I know it to be {strength, struggle, perseverance, beauty, diversity, creativity, vitality}.
What does "girl" mean to you?
{Girl} is a constructed social category. To me {girl} is fluid, constructed, can be deconstructed, and reconstructed time and time again. Sometimes it scares me how much I fall/play into the prescribed scripts outlined for {girl}.
What kind of quirky things do you like to do?
Photography, dance, writing, making collages. I am an artist, a pilgrim, a citizen of the world. Learning -in every form imaginable is my passion. I love the mystery and intrigue of first encounters, as well as the ability to read my history on the faces of family and old friends.
How do you embrace your quirky?
I thrive off of Memory, synchronicities, intuition, ladybugs, rivers, prayer, sunsets & sunrises, glances of honesty, peace Of mind, sorrow, inspiration, compassion, chaos, laughing my ass off into a state of breathlessness and oblivion, herbal tea w/ an overabundance of honey, dancing endlessly in the rain, Finnish rice pudding, mud between my toes, creating art with my body, lost and found materials, my camera, sitting, thinking, living, breathing, knowing, observing every little detail about you, seeing past what is there in order to create my own reality which is always subject to change, tears of clay, itsy bitsy grains of knowledge and sand, moments I know that I will never live again (are they lost or are they found*), writing, I love to write, to exist, to exit, I am a refugee of my own reality, inciting vision, inspiring change, I roam the world knowing that life will happen to me if I am open to life, stripping you to the core of your naked reality, codes written on the body through the secret language of birth marks and scars, I thrive off of my own uncertainty, pierce through the layers of my retina and corner me into my blind spotted illusion. Please, incite me to dance with thee.
What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?
Open, embracing, understanding, quirky black girls keeping it loose and keeping it tight.
