When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?
I wouldn't call MYSELF a quriky black girl, but I by the 3rd grade I realized others thought I was. I moved from Germany to my parents' home town, St. Louis, Mo. Teachers and students alike singled me out as "speaking proper" and the label of "wannabe white" and "uppity" followed me across statelines. When in actuality, my non urban accented english was a result of speaking fluent German before English as my family lived entirely within the German economy. We lived in a small Bavarian village and my sister and I both went to German Schools.
What does "quirky" mean to you?
"Quirky" to me means that people are both fascinated and critical of your ways and interests at the same time.
What does "black" mean to you?
"Black", to me, means of African decent.
What does "girl" mean to you?
"Girl", to me, means any female.
What kind of quirky things do you like to do?
I've earned the label of quirky by: being a digital artist (the subject matter of my art includes pinups and online game content), not "sounding black", marrying somebody who's not black, LOVING more than rap & r&b music, and not being religious.
How do you embrace your quirky?
I embrace my "quirky" by doing what suits me regardless of how others view my choices. I had to learn to let the stares and the idle chatter about me, my appearance, and those I choose to have relationships with go unacknowledged.
What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?
LOL-wow. Um, okay-wierd question. Not sure I know how to answer that one.
