When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?
Still wandering through the meaning making of being and becoming.
What does "quirky" mean to you?
Playing with eternal questions and thinking sushi and cheez-its are equally magical joys. It also means liking yellow a lot and having a bigger net of feelings to describe your spiritual life than one tiny religion. It means painting an eternally widening canvas and counting each daisy as unique in and of itself. I considery quirky to also mean crafty, creative, a form of alchemy.
What does "black" mean to you?
Knowing I have roots throughout history to be proud of who were strong and wise beyond their time. It means whatever I decide it to mean at any given moment.
What does "girl" mean to you?
One who is on the path to soul womanhood to match the wisdom dropping into a life lived. They say grace is the refinement of a soul through time so a girl is a spark of light beginning. It is also a performed piece of language that highlights gender labels. I think it means radical - as in root of power, originial vision.
What kind of quirky things do you like to do?
Talk to Ella Baker through my artwork, consider books as nourishing as my next meal, talk about Audre Lorde in the same hour as I analyze The Smurfs society, enjoy crayons, spoken word, lavender goat cheese and working with/for young people. Being a proud out lesbian makes me queerishly quirky. Look for other artists/seekers/dreamers who want to dance down the frozen food aisle with me. I also aspire to be Red Fraggle.
How do you embrace your quirky?
I remember those who have come before to make a way for me. I dress like a stargazer lily with lots of textures and colors that make me think of blooming and black rock stars. I meditate and enjoy my quiet time that channels my inner wellness and peace. I soulify pop tunes that make me grin with my biggest hair day in my bedroom mirror even if I can't carry a tune.
What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?
It looks like art-justice communities spread all over manifesting change. It looks like thousands of Audres and Ellas organizing across intersections where cultural work is valued and celebrated. Hopefully very soon it will mean QBGs in my daily community.
How did you hear about QBG?
