When did you realize you were a quirky black girl?
I've always known... queer identified, basketball playin, book lovin' over achiever...
What does "quirky" mean to you?
Quirky means "not a stereotype."
What does "black" mean to you?
I actually identify as bLaK- because I think black is a tarnished overused identifier.
What does "girl" mean to you?
For me, it means my sex, for a transwoman it might mean her gender.
What kind of quirky things do you like to do?
Who likes to frequent poetry spots, travel on her own, meet all kindsa people and just love :)
How do you embrace your quirky?
I start social networks (beyondstud.ning.com), I join social networks like this one, I work with kids, I bLoG, I give of myelg (cheerfully) to strangers when they least expect it, I keep loving despite having my heart broken several times over...
I exist.
What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like?
Me, Imani Tolliver, a couple of my ex-girlfriends (MOST), my momma on her "deep" days, some of my momma's best friends (esp. my Godmommy Komesia)
I hope my wife will be a QBG. I think I'll start praying on that today (5/24/09)
How did you hear about QBG?
The woman who wrote this told me about it:
"What does your ideal quirky black girl world look like? Well, if she were sweet, studly & scholarly she would look like Krys Freeman. She would also look like my mum in the early seventies, in a matching hot pant/vest/long scarf ensemble and a page boy wig. And I suppose she would look like me too, around 9 years old, in a floral green and pink chiffon blouse tied at my waist, hip huggers, missing a tooth or two while grinning wide for photos outside of the London Museum of Natural History. Hm...heavy in the row...not anything in particular. Highlights of '09 for me were discovering the Verve Remix series (ridiculously, ridiculously dope), Metric's pretty dope album Grow Up and Blow Away, The Organ's one good album, Grab That Gun, and basically a bunch of folk music, from more of the old favorites like Lizz Wright & T. Chapman to newbies on the bigger scene like Swell Season. Oh, and some great afro punk real recently, but they're EP turned out not to be nearly as great as my intro to them at a live show was, but if you haven't heard of em yet, Earl Greyhound is on some good stuff. Anyway...living in Seattle has clearly gotten to me, lol. I should be askin YOU about what's in your rotation.. :-)

Been doin' alright, man. Better than alright, really. Well enough in that essential space of cognizance and conscience to be increasingly concerned with how others are doing. Of course...the more we we open our eyes, the bleaker the picture tends to look. But since much of what isn't right came about by our very own hands as a species...there's plenty of hope and motivation to fuel the fire. The new enlightenments are certainly underway, in any case. Anyway...I hope all's well witcha in the bay... :-)
